Australia’s Silicon Quantum Computing (SQC) has picked up an additional $40 million in funding from the Australian government, and also has a new backer in the form of London-based Firgun Ventures.

The National Reconstruction Fund Corporation (NRFC), a financing arm of the Australian government, had announced back in March that it was investing $20 million in SQC, but this week boosted its bet by $40 million. And, according to a separate press release, the NRFC also was joined as an SQC investor by Firgun Ventures, quantum-dedicated venture capital firm.

Firgun’s involvement with SQC comes days after it was announced as a participant in a massive funding round for Oxford Quantum Circuits. The VC also has invested in Photonic, Inc., and Quantum Motion this year.

SQC, highly regarded since its 2017 spin-out from the University of New South Wales, is one of 11 companies chosen for Stage B of the US government’s Quantum Benchmarking Initiative.

SQC uses phosphorus atoms “precision placed in pure silicon” as part of its qubit approach, the company has said. Here’s more about that.
