The Trump administration delivered its long-awaited Executive Order on quantum computing, as well as a second somewhat unexpected EO on post-quantum security.
The quantum sector has been expecting and hoping for an EO for more than nine months since the first reports of a possible order emerged, and there were at least a couple of times in that San of months when it seemed like the EO was about to drop an didn’t. Now, the White House has made up for the long wait by delivering not only an Executive Order aimed at updating the country’s National Quantum Strategy, but also a second EO seeking to accelerate the post-quantum cryptography migration.
You can delve into both links above for the details, but for the most part, both orders deliver the goods. The first outlines plans to develop a scientifically-relevant quantum computer and quantum sensing networks, and the second speeds up the push for widespread PQC standards adoption (granted, NIST’s PQC standardization effort very likely was slowed a bit by federal budget cuts implemented by the very same administration).
All of this comes about a month after the federal government announced $2 billion worth of funding for multiple quantum computing companies, a move which itself came after months of speculation and–let’s admit it–a good deal of doubt.
Collectively, with the two EOs and the funding program, along with some other reboots of departmental quantum grant programs, the Trump administration is making good on pledges t take quantum seriously and boost the industry doing all the hard work.
