IQM Quantum Computers debuted as a publicly-traded company (NSDQ: IQMX) barely a week ago, and just can’t stay out of the headlines since.
In its most recent announcement, Espoo, Finland-based IQM said it will be deploying its H4 Halocene quantum computer as part of a hybrid quantum-classical high-performance computing and AI research project at the LUMI AI Factory in Kajaani, Finland. That’s in IQM’s own backyard, relatively speaking, and yes, it’s the home of the LUMI supercomputer, still considered one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world.
The machine, which will be called the LUMI-IQ, will start with 150 qubits when it’s ready in 2027, but LUMI AI Factory has big plans for it. “Over the next years, LUMI-IQ will evolve into a fault-tolerant quantum computer through a series of upgrades that increase both qubit count and performance, making the LUMI AI Factory a world-leading European hybrid platform combining AI and quantum computing,” describes Mikael Johansson, Manager for Quantum Technologies at CSC – IT Center for Science.
The LUMI-IQ quantum computer will be jointly funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, Finland, Czechia, Norway and Poland.
This is not IQM’s first quantum-classical supercomputer deployment, as it also had earlier systems deployed in the US at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, home of the Frontier supercomputer, and in Italy through an integration with the Leonardo supercomputer.
The LUMI AI Factory announcement came just two days after IQM revealed that it acquired “select assets” of Quantistry, a company based in Berlin, Germany, with a cloud-native simulation workflow platform that can be used in digital twins and other modeling programs in multiple industries, such as aerospace and pharmaceuticals. IQM’s aim is merge that software platform with its quantum hardware to have a “full-stack industrial simulation platform.”
“True commercialization of quantum computing requires more than powerful hardware,” said IQM Co-founder and CEO said Jan Goetz. “It requires a bridge between hardware, software, and real industrial applications. The acquisition of Quantistry’s software assets builds that bridge. It accelerates our software development timeline in a capital-efficient way, and brings in a technical team whose expertise will help us deliver cloud-accessible simulation value to enterprise customers. This is the kind of move that gets us there faster.”
“Enterprise value” and “enterprise utility” are fast becoming the new catchphrases in quantum computing as companies–particularly the publicly-traded ones like IQM, face mounting pressure to demonstrate commercial proof-points and produce real revenue. IQM is not the first to talk about enterprise value, as firms like IonQ and IBM have been doing so for a while, but IQM’s recent moves show how it’s positioning itself more of a champion for quantum’s shift into the enterprise.
